It was quiet here in the cave, far quieter than it had been in any cave that he’d ever been in before then. Usually there was the sound of at least some Pokemon of one species or another, the more common being the sounds of Swoobat or Zubat, but Cobalt Cave was dead silent, and it was that dead air that had him on edge. His hand dropped down to rest against the hilt of his dagger, eyes flickering over his surroundings warily at the sound of every plink of water. It was odd how much the areas underneath the curtain of shadow had changed, almost as if the darkness had made them more hostile towards everything. Though that shouldn’t surprise him, given the explanation that the Pokemon professors were handing out. If the shadowed regions were really made that way by Arceus having a nightmare, then perhaps it made sense for everything to seem so much more menacing. And sure, he didn’t care one way or the other whether an area was in shadow or light, but Marion had… and he’d sworn that he would carry out her last wish to purify the islands. Of course, if he was being honest with himself, he had come out here trying to avoid Adrian, but he shoved that thought away to the deepest corners of his mind, not wanting to be distracted in an environment that put him so much on edge. Finally he decided that there was nothing for it. He rummaged around in his pockets, pulling out a single Pokeball and tossing it up into the air, wincing as his surroundings were lit up by the bright white light of the Pokemon he’d just released. Sure, he’d just telegraphed his location to any hostile Pokemon nearby, but the extra pair of eyes – and the potential for light that the Cyndaquil provided – certainly made up for it. “Flame up, Baku,” he murmured, snapping his fingers together to create a small flame, almost as if he was a butane lighter, though in actuality it was really just him being his usual Flareon Pokemorph self. “I don’t like this… it seems too much like an ambush, and we’re pretty far in shadowed territory.” The little Fire-type nodded, puffing himself up and causing his flames to shoot out of his back while he darted closer to his Trainer’s side. No one was going to get past him to hurt James if he could say anything about it! |
