█ all those moments will be lost in time |
Snow fell in heavy disarray, sweeping across the isle with surprising perseverance despite the otherwise aimless course. It brought with it a bitter cold, frozen white letters spilling across an endless blank page. The man had to slide his arms out of his coat sleeves so to warm them against his body; he had not planned to wander this far outside the city limits, nor had he ever done so before.
"Nudge!!!" He hollered, voice hoarse and lips already cracking. A strong wind threatened his process across the bridge, brown snow boots crunching through the drift. His tall frame teetered like a broken mast, a ship bobbing precariously over rough waters. Matthias had seen many such boats when he was a child, desperately fighting their way towards shore. The lighthouse had called out to them, a radiant beam in the night, the only reminder of home as the ravenous waves tore at the sides of the vessels.
Even experienced captains rarely made it back from storms such as those that rocked and savaged the bay in his hometown. Thinking back to the meek, wooden splinters of his father's little fishing boat, Matthias saw that it was no wonder the man had not made it back. The sky could become so dark, washing out the way home. The bravest of men voyaged into it and were swallowed in the gray, and as a last vindictive act, the spitting foam did not return their bodies even when its wrath had subsided. Bones of people you might have once known littered the ocean floor, a graveyard as wide as the sea.
"Come on, little guy.." It was a soft plea to whatever unnatural forces might answer. His words were hardly more tangible than the puff of breath frosting in the air, the man's face seemingly stuck as a result of the frigid temperature. Even if the object of his searching was to pop out at that very moment, he would not be able to move his mouth into the smallest of smiles.
Matthias's totodile had run off at some point while the man was having a conversation in their favorite tavern. One minute, the little blue water type had been chewing on his pant legs, vying for attention, when the next thing Matthias knew, the pokemon had run out the door and into the street.
It's dangerous for him! He'd instantly thought, knowing the rambunctious creature had no fur to keep itself warm. Even stronger was the fear that if he didn't get to Nudge in time, something bigger would. He'd hoped and prayed that his pokemon was simply playing a joke, a game of tag to keep Matthias from talking to strangers in favor of Nudge, but the little guy had run all the way to the bridge, and now Matthias was struggling to follow the pokemon's reptilian tracks in the ever thickening snow.
Truth be told, neither Matthias nor Nudge had ever been into the shadowed lands. Although Matthias had since left his hometown and that lonely house by the sea, he had done so before the shadows had gotten to it. Now, it was too late to go back even if he wanted to. The darkness was slowly creeping in, and, always one to be afraid of the creatures roaming beneath his floorboards at night, he had kept his distance from the nightmare crawling upon them.
Nudge, however, was no such a coward.
Just then, Matthias spotted a little blue dot in the distance. It appeared to be struggling through the piling layers of snow, its form disappearing every now and then as it slipped beneath the surface only to come up floundering again moments later. With a burst of adrenaline, the man stumbled and leaped through the thick white, faceplanting now and again, but finally reaching the blue pokemon. As soon as he was close enough, he scooped the totodile up out of the snow and into his arms, hurriedly tucking the struggling creature into his jacket.
"NUDGE! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!" He scolded, but his voice shook with relief instead of anger. The little starter pokemon was shivering against him, but stubbornly refuse to stay put. It released its odd little squawking roar and valiantly fastened its jaws around its master's wrist, effectively sending Matthias yelping in pain. He let go, and the little pokemon jumped out of his hold, landing a foot away and promptly turning back to face its owner. Matthias stared in astonishment as Nudge took a deep breath— and proceeded to ramble off in an extremely wordy speech that the man understood not a single word of.
Still, he listened his best. Nudge had always been very different from him. Like night and day, they had completely opposite views and understandings of so many various things. Matthias had never wanted to be a trainer, not in the sense of pitting pokemon against one another to see who came out on top. But Nudge was ambitious and feisty; he was a proud little pokemon that wanted to prove his strength to all who came across him. Doing so meant taking on challenges, the kinds of obstacles you only find in the shadow lands, but his timid trainer was holding him back. Matthias at least understood this much, from Nudge's numerous past attempts to start conflicts with other trainers that Matthias had always managed to talk (and occasionally pay) their way out of. Now, this was different. This was Nudge's dream against Matthias's own.
"I get it.. Even if I don't follow you, you'll leave anyways. Is that it?" The totodile nodded, eyes hard with determination despite its cold, shaking form and tiny stature.
"... I don't want to see you get hurt. I don't want to be someone who just uses you and other pokemon to prove myself. Where's the sense in that?" He argued, obviously setting the little totodile off, as it earned him a fierce water gun to the face. "Okayokay-s-stop!" The tall man sputtered, icicles already forming in his dripping wet hair.
To his surprise, Nudge quieted for a moment before tottering over to him. The totodile stopped directly in front of Matthias, and the man tensed, nervously awaiting the creature's response. After a moment of shared silence, the little reptile gently tugged on Matthias's injured wrist and proceeded to give it an apologetic lick. Although it left a shockingly cold swath of saliva over the bitemark, the man's heart warmed irrevocably at the affectionate gesture.
"We can do it together, is that what you mean?"
"Tota-tota!"
He laughed and wiped his nose, eyes softening as the little creature looked up at him boldly.
"And if I let you down?"
Nudge shook his head fiercely, before flexing his stubby little arms and putting on a brave face. Although it was meant to look tough and intimidating, it came off to the man as incredibly endearing.
".. Alright. You win, I suppose. Still, there's no way we're running off into the shadows unprepared like this. I left your pokeball and everything else with the barkeep. We'll have to go back-" He paused mid-sentence when Nudge began shivering again, only just remembering how cold the pokemon must be.
A good idea crossed his mind, the lingering warmth from their touching compromise mixing with the fierce chill of the night to inspire a sort of impulsive spontaneity in the man. A gust of snow swept on by, and where once had stood a human, a brown stag shook its wooly white mane, antlers stark and proud against the gray sky. It snorted, great puffs of heat leaving the sawsbuck's nostrils, before the pokemon bowed and allowed the little totodile to climb onboard.
There, the blue pokemon snuggled into the fluffy mess of fur adorning the sawsbuck's neck, and Matthias (or rather the pokemon that he had become) rose slowly, eyes glittering intelligently as he started back through the snow, the other end of the bridge a long, far walk away.
