HISTORY & POKEMORPH
James was born the eldest of two children. His little sister, Marion, was a beautiful girl, sweet and kind, and almost from the day she was born, he dedicated himself to her happiness. He hated seeing her cry, and when she smiled, nothing made him happier. When he was three, however, a new family moved in next door to him in Goldenrod, and he suddenly had a new friend. James and Marion both grew close to the new boy, Adrian Vivaldi, and it wasn't uncommon for them to vie for his attention. Much to James' sorrow, however, he was often pushed aside for Marion, the young ginger not understanding what it was about him that was leading him to get pushed aside, and he responded by distancing himself from them as much as he could. He began to retreat to the nearby routes for his solitude, walking among the Pokemon and not bothering them so as not to get attacked. It was during one of these walks that he found his partner, a small Cyndaquil by the name of Bakufan, Baku for short. Baku had a Trainer already, a man who was fond of aiming a kick at the young Fire-type when it would lose a battle, and when Baku couldn't handle the nearby gym leader's Pokemon, he had been abandoned. Seeing how skinny the Cyndaquil was, James' heart melted and he took the little Pokemon under his wing, letting it have his lunch. A friendship was born that day that would sustain James through thick and thin. Bakufan was rarely far from its Trainer's side, and the pair often slept together as the eight year old grew older and matured to fourteen. But the period of time between those years was rough. Marion and Adrian had become closer, making James much more of the third wheel than he was before, and James often heard her proclaim that she loved Adrian when she was around the house with him. Ordinarily, a brother would be happy to know that his sister was so happy and in love, and James was, but there was always an accompanying sting of pain whenever the subject would be brought up. At first he didn't understand it, but then... then he had his first dream about Adrian, and suddenly he realized. He loved his best friend. At the same time though, he experienced his first heartbreak. Adrian's father was extremely homophobic, and although the other boy was more accepting than his father, he had made it clear - to James at least - that his affections lay with Marion, not her brother. James wasn't usually the type to cry, but more than a few tears were shed over that fact after significant steps in Marion and Adrian's relationship. Bakufan, the one to witness such breakdowns, finally snapped one day and bit Adrian and Marion, fire flaring up at them as it tried to defend its Trainer's heart. It was that day that James realized he couldn't stay. It wouldn't be fair to impose upon his sister's happiness, or to risk his love getting attacked by his Pokemon. He collected some money, informed his heartbroken parents that he'd bought a ticket to Unova and was leaving with Bakufan, and then braved his fear of open water to depart. What he didn't tell anyone was that he had joined up with Team Plasma. He may not have believed in their goals, but they got him away from that situation. He wouldn't fight, it went too against his morals, but since he was so good with the Pokemon that many of the grunts had, he was permitted to stay. When the group disbanded, he and Bakufan merely picked up and kept going. He was seventeen, and just as soon as Team Plasma had been disbanded, news of Kalos being taken by shadow began to hit the news. James took advantage of the confusion to fade away into the background, and his family lost touch with him entirely, not even receiving the occasional letter that they had been getting while he was still in Team Plasma. For about five years he wandered the various regions, keeping ahead of the shadowed curtain and learning how to use a sword for his own protection after he was nearly killed by a bunch of stampeding Sawsbuck, but he and Bakufan never looked back. Or at least, they didn't until the old family Pidgeot found him with a letter in its beak. After he'd left, his family had relocated to the Romantic Isles, which was only just beginning to fall to shadow at the time. His sister, who had wanted to save the Pokemon in those regions, had been working hard to try to save a trapped Cyndaquil on one of the islands when she slipped and fell from a high cliff into the waves. Her body was later recovered, and the date of the funeral would be the following day. Sucker punched with the blow, James had the Pidgeot fly him to the isles so that he could attend the funeral, where he was met with a bawling mother and a scolding father. He had no emotion about them being upset with his leave, though he blinked when his mother gave him Marion's diary. What he found floored him. Adrian had been upset while he was gone. Marion had been furious with him for leaving. She'd always looked at the newspapers, hoping to hear news of him, and whenever someone from Team Plasma was busted, she had gone down to the police station to demand the names of those arrested. And then later, when shadows first began to touch the land, she would ask anyone she could who ventured beyond the lightened areas for news, for a glimpse of someone who could have been her brother. Her dearest wish had been to purify the shadowed areas so that she could find him and bring him back. And then, while he was reeling from the fact that he had made her upset by trying to make her happy, he looked up and caught Adrian's eye at the wake, and all of the feelings from his childhood slammed back into him. He still loved Adrian, and time had not changed that. Not wanting to insult Marion's memory and frightened of Adrian's reaction should the other find out his feelings, he ran away again, though this time he at least stayed on the isles. His little sister had wanted to purify the isles that she loved... and he figured that fulfilling her last request would be repentance enough for hurting her and for loving the man that she loved. And as for the future, well... he'll handle that as it comes. | Flareon Fire Flash Fire Kuroya Eighteen |
